I Voted Today

I voted today.

Then I burst into tears when I walked out of the polling place. I have never done anything like that before.

Politics is not my favorite thing. For a lot of reasons.
Not really into it. But I do vote. I think it’s important. I also wish it was Nov. 5.

After I voted today I started thinking about how awesome America is. We live in the greatest country on the planet.

I’ve had the opportunity to minister in 18 different nations. No question, all of those nations have their unique and beautiful characteristics. But no other nation gives the freedom and opportunity we have in America.

My friend, Chims Phiri, lives in Zimbabwe. Their president was recently voted out of office. He didn’t like being voted out, so he unleashed a torrent of persecution and violence on people he thought opposed him. Chim’s wife has just recently spent 3 months in a hospital as a result of a politically motivated attack. Zimbabwe’s inflation rate is totally out of control. Something like 1,000 per cent.

America is not perfect by any means but I feel incredibly blessed to live here. Our economy may be taking a hit right now but we still live in an incredibly amazing place. Plus, we all get to vote, in freedom, for whoever we think will do the best job. (Or at least vote for the lessser of evils.)

This may sound hokey but – God Bless America, land that I love!!

  1. Got my absentee ballot in mail yesterday from Michigan......Terri and I will vote tonite and mail them off. I am excited every time I vote, especially in a Presidential election. It is very easy for me to vote because God set down guidelines for me long ago concerning certain moral issues. Looking at that criteria it is a easy decision even though I wanted better representatives from both parties to be here at this point. My best memory of voting is when I was in the Navy and President Reagan won.....the ship erupted...a president who was on our side. He promptly signed a bill giving us a retroactive pay raise of 13 per cent. Anyways..I share your thoughts of elections and our great country!

  2. Rhonda J Said,

I voted last week and had the same reaction. I sat in my car and had a very emotional moment, just thanking God for this country and the priveledges that we have. Maybe I don't agree with everything that either candidate represents, but at least we have the right, and in my opinion the obligation, to vote for who we believe would be best for our country. I'm with you PK, God Bless America!

  3. KHawk Said,

I voted last week. Had my 8 year old niece and 9 year old nephew with me. Somehow we had a lllooonnnggg discussion about who and what to believe during an election. These young children quoted a lot of TV ads, classmates, and probably parents. It was a deep discussion on how in the world can you tell if someone is lying?

We ended the conversation by talking about how lucky we are to live in America. How lucky we are that we can vote. How lucky we are to have the freedom to choose any profession, any home, any religion, any friends, and any candidate that we want.

I may never know how profound the conversation was for these young children, but it definitely had a profound impact on me.

Thanks for sharing your experience Pastor.
